🔥Fire🔥

Fire was probably humankind’s first invention - well, not an invention as such, but the power to create fire on demand and control it in order to heat and cook certainly was.

And today, Guy Fawkes night is usually a huge celebration of fire with the bonfire and fireworks!! But that’s not because the poor man was burnt at the stake. No, he died a traitor’s death of hanging, drawing and quartering.

But fires were a way of signalling things between towns and villages, as well as a traditional way to celebrate. After the foiling of the gunpowder plot, people were ordered to celebrate the survival of parliament and the king each year. So beacon fires and celebratory fires were lit, feasting went on and generally, a good time was had by all.

That’s why, in many places, effigies of Guy Fawkes will be burnt on a big bonfire.

But before that, since the dawn of humankind, fire has been used as a means to cook and to light and heat our homes, whether they were simple caves or something more elaborate.
And when humans discovered metalworking, the fire fuelled the smelters and forges that enabled us to create tools, weapons and jewellery.

Nothing warms you more than the sight of a real fire, whether that’s an open fireplace, a log burner, or a gas fire.

But fire can also be extremely destructive, as we saw in all those wildfires in Australia and around the world over the last few years.

And fire in or around our homes can be devastating and even fatal.
Many people, pets, and precious possessions are saved by the bravery of firefighters.

So, today, let’s celebrate all things fiery in the form of music, pictures, gifs or videos, as well as our normal friendly fun and chat!!

All are welcome.
