🥚World Egg Day🥚
Today is World Egg Day, and you could ask why something as simple as an egg deserves its own day. Well, let's find out.
Eggs are so versatile and are one of the oldest foods known to man. They are full of protein and can be eaten boiled with soldiers for breakfast, scrambled (not in a microwave, but in a saucepan, as the taste is completely different) poached, and of course, fried with a soft yolk. They can also be hard-boiled for sandwiches, and there is nothing nicer than a hard-boiled egg mashed up with onion and herbs and pepper, with a bit of mayo added, and put between 2 slices of bread.
They can also be used for cooking as in omelettes or as a binding for cakes etc. And how can you have egg custard without them?
So, today, we celebrate these small things of deliciousness and the important part they play in our lives.
Eggs come in various shapes and sizes, and prices vary as to where the chickens are kept. The cheap eggs generally are tasteless, and have very thin shells, the best with the most taste is free range, and with a golden yolk - can’t beat it.
When we think of eggs, we think of chicken, duck or goose eggs, and out of those, the chicken egg is the favourite. But its history goes back further than that. In different cultures around the world, eggs mean something different. They are a sign of fertility and renewal and rebirth.
There is also the Easter Egg which we all love at Easter.
And Fabergé Eggs and these beautiful jewelled eggs were created by Peter Carl Fabergé from St. Petersburg Russia.
Here are some facts about eggs, I didn't know some of them:
Egg Color is Determined By Earlobes. The colour of the egg doesn’t have anything to do with freshness, flavour or nutritional value. In fact, the colour of the egg is determined strictly by the breed of the hen and corresponds to the colour of the hen’s earlobe!
Chefs’ Hats are Influenced by Eggs. Some people aren’t aware that going back a little in history, the meaning of the number of the pleats in a chef’s hat was related to the number of ways that the chef was able to cook an egg. The ultimate goal and badge of true honour was to get to 100 pleats.
Iowa is a Big Egg Producer. In the United States, the state of Iowa leads the nation in egg production, with more than 14 billion eggs every single year! The next state comes in at around half of that: Ohio produces a little under 8 billion eggs per year.
Eating cooked eggs is healthier. While some people think that eating a raw egg will help to build muscle, that’s not true. Only about 50% of the proteins in a raw egg can be digested. After it’s cooked, the body can digest more than 90% of the proteins.' My Grandmother would have a raw egg every day, yuck the thought of it.
So, do you eat eggs, chocolate or otherwise?
Let's crack a few smiles today by sharing all things eggy, in whatever form they come!!
All are welcome.
And please feel free to share all discussions you enjoy.
