St George’s Day

Yes, today is St George’s Day, the patron saint of England!

And finally, as with Scotland, Ireland and Wales, it is becoming acceptable to celebrate this day as they do, to embrace all things England and English!

But St George is the patron saint of many countries other than England: Georgia, Russia, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, many parts of Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Malta, Bosnia, Montenegro and Serbia. Some orthodox churches in Egypt and India also venerate George.

St George was believed to be a Roman officer of Greek descent who was martyred for his Christian beliefs.

The dragon legend wasn’t added to his tale until the 11th century, but it made George a symbol of chivalry, courage, and the victory of good over evil worldwide.

So, today, let’s celebrate all things George, dragon, England and chivalry, with music, images, memes, jokes or gifs.

All are welcome.
