🥤🥛🍼National Milk Day🥤🥛🍼

Milk is something we all eat or drink in one form or another, so today, it has its own special day!

The general idea is that today was created to celebrate the first time it was delivered in glass bottles, and this, they think, dates back to 1915 in the US.

It soon caught on, and now it is a day just dedicated to Milk itself, its health benefits, and the farming industry that produces it.

Milk is now readily available in cartons and, unfortunately, plastic bottles in most shops. There are still a few milkmen left but they are few and far between.
When I was young, we had fresh milk delivered every day, including Christmas Day, and there were 4 different coloured tops.

  • Silver was full-fat milk

  • Red was Semi-skimmed

  • Blue was Skimmed

  • Gold was Jersey and Guernsey Cream Milk, but only rich people could afford that!

They were left on the doorsteps, and if you found any holes in your bottle and milk missing, blame the blue tits!

As a school group, we were taken to a milk bottling factory at Vauxhall, but nowadays, there are local dairy farms you can visit to get a better understanding of the journey of milk from cow or goat to the processing part and then to the grocery store.

How cows are milked nowadays

People think of milk just from cows, but there are alternative sources, goats and sheep, and that milk is good for cheese.

Some people are allergic to cow’s milk, due to intolerance problems, but there are plenty to choose from, and although cow’s milk is about 85% sourced all over the world, you could try one of the others.

  • Goats Milk - I have had goat’s milk straight from a goat after milking it, and it was quite nice, but that was fresh.

  • Almond Milk – a highly preferred milk substitute made from this tree nut

  • Coconut Milk – made from the juice that is extracted from inside the soft coconut center

  • Oat Milk – made from rolled oats blend

  • Soy Milk – made from soybeans that are ground, boiled and strained

  • Rice Milk – like soy milk, this is made when the rice grains are ground, boiled and strained

Milk is used in a lot of other things, apart from a bottle of milk: custard, yogurt, shakes, cheese, butter, and put in hot drinks, to name a few. In fact, some coffees are just hot milk. There are also other delights like chocolate and ice cream. Babies also thrive on milk, but Mother’s milk is the best thing.
