🐧🐧It’s Penguin Awareness Day🐧🐧
Come on, admit it, we all love penguins. There is something about them that endears them to us.
They are fun, interesting, and unique. At the moment, there are over 18 different species, and some have been around over 65 million years. Unfortunately, like most animals, penguin populations are getting smaller.
Today is a good chance to learn about these wonderful creatures and understand the critical situation they are in.
We all think of penguins as shown in films, very laid back etc. This is true, but what we are never shown really is the environment they live in, the dangers they face and how it is changing around them.
These are just some of the reasons they are endangered:
habitat loss
pollution
disease
reduced food availability due to commercial fishing.
Climate change is of particular concern for many species of penguin, as the sea ice that they depend on to find food or build nests is melting before their eyes.
Today, to help celebrate it, try and learn something about these brilliant animals. How they live, socialise with each other and what they eat. There are plenty of vids on YouTube about them, or watch a documentary or read a book. You can visit a sanctuary or zoo if you have one nearby.
You could consider donating to a charity, it doen't have to be a fortune, but for the price of something that you don't really need could help. The Global Penguin Society does conservation designed to protect their habitat and advocates for the protection of the Southern Oceans. You can also adopt a Penguin for as little as a few pounds a month. Just a couple of cups of coffee out!
Can you imagine a world without these fun animals?!
So today, let's enjoy these wonderful creatures while we still have them, cos they may not be around for much longer.
Let’s post all things penguin-related, be it vids, music, pics etc.
