I'm Popeye The Sailor Man

Popeye is a cartoon character who first appeared way back in 1929. It was in a comic strip that Elzie Crisler Seagar created. The comic originally was about Olive Oyl, but Popeye soon out shadowed her and by 1933 Popeye had his own cartoon series. The first of which was "I Yam What I Yam". Fleischer Studios released the cartoon between 1933 and 1942. Even after all this time, there aren't many people that don't love Popeye.

We all know him as a fun-loving sailor who eats spinach and smokes a pipe. His romantic relationship with Olive started to evolve and in 1933 Swee'Pea is adopted by Popeye.

Over the years, Popeye has appeared in comic books, tv cartoons, video games and loads of adverts. There was also the live-action film starring Robin Williams as Popeye in 1980. Although basically, Popeye was a kid’s thing, it was given an 18 certificate because he smokes a pipe.

To this day, Popeye is as popular as ever and I am sure we all know these sayings:

  • "I'm strong to the finich, 'cause I eats me spinach, I'm Popeye the sailor man!" ...

  • "Where's the entrance to the exit?" ...

  • "I'll take all on one at a time!" ...

  • "I ain't no tailor but I know what suits me." ...

  • "That's all I can stands, I can stands no more." ...

  • "I yam what I yam and that's all what I yam."

Let us know what you think of Popeye. Love him or hate him, he is here to stay!

All are welcome.
