Cheese Rolling
In this Country, we are well known for our eccentric traditions: Pooh Sticks, Mud Wrestling, Egg Throwing and Cheese Rolling, to name a few. All are great fun, and people love to go and watch them!
Today, the hillsides in Gloucestershire become home to a very unique tradition: Cheese Rolling.
This tradition dates back to at least 1826 and is held every Spring Bank Holiday.
It is great fun but not one for the fainted-hearted. It involves following a 9lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down the hillside, and the winner is the first to cross the line, not always very easily. It is Double Gloucester cheese that is always used. It sounds like an easy thing to participate in, but believe me, it isn't. The hillsides are quite steep, and you may start off walking or running down but end up generally tumbling most of it. It is great fun.
I believe Health and Safety tried to ban it and was told no chance, and I think the contestants have to sign a disclaimer now before taking part. It is a free event to go and watch as well, and a fun day out.
Obviously, unless you live in the area, it is a no-no, but you can celebrate it and have some fun if you want to.
A few of you could set up a small cheese-rolling slope in a local park and use mini cheeses like Gloucester or Babybel. Or organise a few relay races in the park with a small cheese wheel or ball as the baton, make it a small obstacle course, and maybe have some small prizes for the winning team. It would be a fun day out locally.
Have a cheese-tasting party in your home or garden. Use a variety of cheese from all over the world, and don't forget the crackers and wine!
As it is a Bank Holiday, any of the above could be fun and a great day out.
So, what are your thoughts on Cheese Rolling?
I would love to have a go, but live too far away. A few bruises never hurt anyone.
Post all things cheese-related and enjoy some fun using this great tradition!
